Hmmm.
Well, one skull does not a surgical theatre make. And without a little
more evidence, and a few more opinions, let's hold off on this awhile.
(This is the skeptic speaking, after all.)
Secondly, I think that I have seen reports of this before, and that, yes,
the wounds from a sabertooth tiger attack were the culprits.
Not that trepaning could not have been practiced. Once the tool is made,
amazing things are done with it. There is even a group today who practice
trepanation and declare it a good thing. A special drill bit and a
variable speed drill are all that is required....
Ancient 'doctors' removed and mutilated quite a few things in the course
of their actions.
