I ran across this interesting passage from _Visual Communication_ by Paul
Martin Lester, which is apparently a first-year text on graphic design.

[On how people used to believe that light originated from the eyes]

"In a poetic description, [The Greek Philosopher] Empedocles said that the
eyes were 'like a lantern' that gave light to all that could be seen. He
also believed that he was a god and tried unsuccessfully to prove the point
by jumping into the volcanic crater of Mt. Etna."
(pg 8)

Now *there's* faith in the One True Conviction, I tell you.
