I bought three books on subliminal advertising by Key sfrom Loompanics
quite a few years ago, read them, and got rid of them. The main problem I
had was that, while there undeniably are subtle and unsubtle sexual
messages in advertising, his claims about subliminal imagery are not
supported by his photographic evidence, at least as reproduced in black
and white in paperback. I'm an artist and very detail-oriented, and even
with his descriptions of the images in hand, I couldn't pick out a single
genital organ or boldface "SEX" from those grainy ads. I suspended
judgement, generously allowing that it might be a publication problem,
rather than rather than a paranoid delusion on Keys' part.
