virus: How did we get here?

I am accessing the Net through a firewall, and "cut-and-paste" doesn't
appear to work for me. Jake asked, "How did you all come to get here?" or
similar.
I followed a link from W. H. Calvin's Science Surf column to the essay
"Viruses of the Mind" and read it; either a search engine or the same
column directed me to Meme Central, and here I am. Now, where exactly are
we? <vbg>
