The more I think about it, the more I think that a strategy involving just selected threads could "work". There is no need to "control" the list, but there is a need to control threads where knowledge creation is wanted. In this way, the list itself can continue to "train" or "enlighten" novices and gradually lift them to the Inner Circle, while at the same time provide a forum for genuine progress at leading edge. (which is really lacking at the moment: witness the failure of the maxim debate)
