It's a strategy that has been used by fundamentalists world and eon wide; repudiate false 'religion' (traditionally Catholicism - see Martin Luther) in the name of true 'faith.' The favorite perpetrators are the Southern Baptists, the Methodists, and the Assembly of God-ers, all of whom deny that their particular sectarian creeds are religious, while all asserting them as (the only) true faith - and I should know, as a former Southern Baptist, with a former Methodist father and a current Assembly of God sister.
