In an interview with POLITICO, the president said:

Quote:
“I think it’s fair to say, if six months ago, before this spill had happened, I had gone up to Congress and I had said we need to crack down a lot harder on oil companies and we need to spend more money on technology to respond in case of a catastrophic spill, there are folks up there, who will not be named, who would have said this is classic, big-government overregulation and wasteful spending.”

[Mo] Indeed GOP nutcase Rand Paul, who shall be named, was the first to start squealing that its "unAmerican" for Obama to do anything in such a disaster other than offer friendly encouraging words to British Petroleum. Most of them are hypocrites, while some of them are just pedal-to-the-metal crazy. I'm not sure which wingnuts are worse, but none-of-them need to be in charge of anything other than pointless navel-gazing.

A bit of humor: Jon Stewart, "BP Is Working Round the Clock to Prevent “Fact Balls” From Washing Onshore"

It's f'n hilarious and less than 10 min, so be sure to watch it.

love,

Jon Taplin makes a very relevant point on Talking Points Memo:
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/11/cheney_come_clean/

Quote:
Since early 2008, I've been writing about Dick Cheney's secret Energy Policy Task Force. But given the role of all the Task Force players (BP, Halliburton and probably TransOcean) in the Gulf Oil Disaster, I think it's time for President Obama to release the notes of those meetings. We will continue to believe the whole course of the Deep Water Horizon scandal can be laid at the feet of Dick Cheney and the decisions made in those secret meetings at the very outset of the Bush Cheney Administration.

Cheney has an easy way to prove I'm wrong. Release the minutes of the Task Force Meetings.

Rep. Joe Barton apologizes to BP and takes heavy heat for stupid comments
June 18, 9:43 AMPolitical Media ExaminerWilliam Skordelis

Quote:
Yesterday on Capital Hill BP's CEO Tony Hayward appeared before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and the top-ranking Republican on the committee, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), gave a formal apology to BP for what he labeled the U.S. government's "shakedown" of BP for a $20 billion "slush fund."

Rand Paul Offers Sympathy For Joe Barton: I Know What A Pile-On Feels Like
First Posted: 06-18-10 11:20 AM  |  Updated: 06-18-10 11:20 AM
Sam Stein
stein@huffingtonpost.com | HuffPost Reporting

Quote:
Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul declined to endorse Rep. Joe Barton's position that the Obama administration shook down executives at BP by forcing them to set up a $20 billion escrow account for victims of the oil spill they caused.

But the Tea Party darling offered his sympathies for the Texas Republican, noting that he too understands what it's like to be at the bottom of a political pile-on. And in a re-airing of a critique he made weeks earlier, he accused the White House of taking too tough a tone with the oil giant.

"I don't know about that," Paul said, when asked about Barton's statement during an appearance on WVLK-AM radio on Friday. "I don't want to pile on him... I know what that feels like. What I will say is I have never liked the tone of the president when he said things or his administration says things like he is going to put the boot on the throat of BP... If we put BP out of business, they can't pay for the cleanup."
