There were massive packet storm attacks on 2009-12-23 which took out UltraDNS servers across the internet and caused massive packet loss in routers across the Internet, especially in Europe (which suggests large Botnets running there). I have noticed and measured bursty packet loss of up to 28% on some routes since then, which suggests that some people are still playing DDOS games.

As a meta issue, the correct answer it DNS vulnerabilities is to run djbdns (refer cr.yp.to). Preferably on top of a stable LDAP (389 Directory Server). Pity that the easy to use management tools (Webmin/Simple Scripts/CPanel) don't support it natively.
