(Lol!)

Vatican Paper Hits 'Intelligent Design'
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/18/ap/world/mainD8F7BDS03.shtml
VATICAN CITY, Jan. 18, 2006

(AP) The Vatican newspaper has published an article saying "intelligent
design" is not science and that teaching it alongside evolutionary theory in
school classrooms only creates confusion.

The article in Tuesday's editions of L'Osservatore Romano was the latest in
a series of interventions by Vatican officials _ including the pope _ on the
issue that has dominated headlines in the United States.

...i always find it peculiar how religious notions always seem to merit some
automatic degree of reverence...as if stepping on someone's insane fantasies
might be tantamount to murder.  it's fucking weird.  at what point will the
world begin to delineate into ideological political groups vs.
geographical/racial groups???  i will laugh a hearty laugh when the worlds
first atheist nation exceeds all other nations in terms of happiness, low
crime, beautification and social balance..and we see religious pundits from
the world over desperately try to sneak in.  i wish such a thing would/could
happen in my short lifetime.

Here is a point where I find myself strangely aligned with the late pope
and his surviving intellectuals in the vatican.  As I recall the nature of
events and as Vatican thinkers prove in retrospect to me (which may be more
important from a memetic PoV anyway) that Intelligent Design is more an
idea out of the thinking and philosophy of the late John Paul II (or Karol
what-ever-his-name-really-is polish catholic).  Of course we might want to
name Michael Behe as the actual champion of the idea, but it took JPII to
make him remotely relevant in the first place so I credit JPII with the
idea instead.  But in any case I enjoy the Catholics rightfully taking
claim for the idea as a religious (vs. secular) idea.  I think their
message works well in any society that appreciates the reasons and
rationales for maintaining some semblence of separation between the the
secular and the sacred.  Unfortunately I have my doubts that the USA is one
of those societies anymore.
