Here is a point where I find myself strangely aligned with the late pope
and his surviving intellectuals in the vatican. As I recall the nature of
events and as Vatican thinkers prove in retrospect to me (which may be more
important from a memetic PoV anyway) that Intelligent Design is more an
idea out of the thinking and philosophy of the late John Paul II (or Karol
what-ever-his-name-really-is polish catholic). Of course we might want to
name Michael Behe as the actual champion of the idea, but it took JPII to
make him remotely relevant in the first place so I credit JPII with the
idea instead. But in any case I enjoy the Catholics rightfully taking
claim for the idea as a religious (vs. secular) idea. I think their
message works well in any society that appreciates the reasons and
rationales for maintaining some semblence of separation between the the
secular and the sacred. Unfortunately I have my doubts that the USA is one
of those societies anymore.
