I can say that I don't really like the video after a few minutes . . . it seems to mostly scroll through some text while a voice reads it to me.  I don't like being read to.

As for the "North American Union", it seems like a natural evolution from NAFTA and our other agreements with Canada and Mexico, and a natural reaction to the EU assuming that the EU survives long enough to gain credibility (decades from now). In any case it doesn't really worry me so much.

I remember playing Risk as a youngster (and even an adult) and North American makes a much more militarily secure unit than the US, Canada, or Mexico separately.  I also have little concern about signing up for Canadian values.  I might have some reservations about Mexican values as they currently stand, but if American workers were to choose whom to compete with, the Mexican labor market such as it is has become much more demanding than other third world markets. And of course under each Republican administration the US is becoming more and more like a third world country anyway.  The trend as it stands now, it will only be a matter of time until the US and Mexico will meet in the middle or perhaps closer to Mexico's standards anyway.

If any particular sovereignty ought to be concerned about this, it should be the Canadians.

I didn't see this as any "big secret" that the media won't report, although I do see the memetic value in telling people that you are going to tell them a secret to get their attention before giving them the information. Most media does not go into any significant analysis and depth, which prognosticating about such a union requires. It rather focusses on more immediate action. I listen to NPR which does make some effort to give a deeper picture, and I've heard various commentators speculate on such an evolution in North America, although I never heard anyone call it "The North American Union". I doubt that it will occur by 2010 like the video says -- I think it will take more time for North Americans to see how the EU progresses before they will feel comfortable considering the same for themselves.  And of course how things improve in Mexico.

If there is anything that would get the Canadians on board it would likely be conflicts with Russia over travel through and resources of the thawing Arctic. Russia has already planted a flag at the North Pole to the protests of other Arctic-bordering nations. If Canadians wish to secure their claims, it might help to be more closely tied to US military.

But the US and Canada are having more and greater disagreements about the North-West Passageand Arctic (cf e.g. http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article341518.ece) than the Canadians, Norwegians and Russians are having about the Arctic (and just wait for Denmark to chime in).

The Americans think that Canada should be forced to open its territorial waters to uncontrolled International shipping on the grounds that they are natural straits. This would have the legal effect of limiting Canadian Arctic claims. The Canadians are arguing that the Northern passage is a landlocked channel in a sensitive ecosystem and subject to Canadian jurisdiction - and have stepped up patrols in the area to deter American attempts to prove that the waters are an open strait.

I suspect the Canadians have the right of it.

Perhaps worth reminding the Americans that the Canadians "won" (in as much as anybody wins a war, through attaining the goals articulated preceding the declaration) the last war the US started with them :-) Given the US performance in Iraq, the Canadians might well win the next one too. No matter how illegal it might be, if Canada occupied the USA to introduce the concepts of "freedom and democracy" to the brutally oppressed and largely delusional American population, much of the world and indeed, many Americans, would say that would be a damned good thing.

Kindest Regards

Looks to me like a Meme to remind Canadians that Americans are not to be trusted. Why else run a story like this at this time other then social engineering.

Though in the video clip he looks like such a nice old guy ... :-)

PS: and its flipp'in cold up here, so we have no qualms about hanging out with the evil empire in Cuba if they take us in from the cold and show us a good time.  :-p

U.S. mobsters planned to kill Trudeau ?
Close ties with Castro said to have triggered plot

Mike Craft, who ran bars frequented by members of the Upper New York State mob, says he came within a few weeks in the summer of 1974 of becoming the assassin of former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

"My job was to kill Pierre Trudeau," Craft, 60, said in an interview. "I'm glad that I didn't."

"I was going to hit him (with a bullet) in the eye and kill him instantaneously," Craft said.

"I did not personally dislike Pierre Trudeau but I was told by my superiors to kill him."

Trudeau was slated for execution because of his close association with Cuban President Fidel Castro, Craft said.

Mobsters like Meyer Lansky hated Castro because he had kicked them out of Cuba and shut down their casinos when he seized power in 1959, Craft said.

They hoped that Castro would attend Trudeau's funeral, so that they could get a shot at him, Craft said.

Craft said he was told to come home to the U.S. and drop the plot to kill Trudeau in mid-September 1974.
