Heartily do I agree with the general message of your post, Nate. The ethic
most appealing to me is one whose guiding principle is the avoidance of
suffering. It's the very foundation of all my considerations, albeit
arbitrary as all principles are. There is no objective measure of good and
evil (surely there has been a lot of writing done on this in the forum),
thus we define for ourselves; we agree on that which our reason, guided by
our emotions (not vice versa), suggests to be "right" - thus, we agree on
that which feels right.
Your post definitely feels right to me; only I guess that you overemphasise
the role of this forum - while I would greatly enjoy meeting some of you in
person, I don't think I ever will for we are distributed all over the world
(btw, were there ever any meetings organised here? I believe one of the
advantages of organised religion is the community aspect - should we not try
to connect more?). While I may find comfort in this virtual community, it is
not as much as I find in really "connecting" with people.
"Equality is true in the minds that make it true." Sounds great.
Somewhat sentimentally - infected by the original post's memes? - on this
