NO! NO! NO! PLEASE DR.SEBBY FOR THE LOVE OF VIRUS, DO NOT START A FLAME WAR! PLEASE JOE FOR THE LOVE OF VIRUS, DO NOT LET HIM BAIT YOU! Dr. Sebby as of this moment is right next to Joe Dees on my ratings. Dr. Sebby should receive two weeks banishment for egregiously violating the ban on this topic and provoking the bull to rampage through the china shop. And if Joe rises above it and holds his tongue, we should award him the Laurel Wreath of Virus and I will personally go in and raise Joe's rating. -Matt

I'm not aware of any ban on the topic of stem cell research.

[Mermaid]when i build my house..it will have a central courtyard..with the skies above..and three floors up...and it will be made of brick, concrete and good old cement! any element of nature is welcome through the hole....its an open invitation!
[Blunderov] Where will this very pleasant sounding design be implemented? Not, I hope, on the Florida Keys. Ever read the novel 'Hurricane' (John D MacDonald ISBN: B0000CJTQ7)?
[Mermaid]Been through it all..hurricanes, cyclones, floods..altho' i am not sure its anything remotely similiar to these fearful shows they put up in the northern american continent..
re the house with the courtyard..its very similar to the middle eastern style courtyard houses..in rajasthan, they are called 'havelis'...actually, in the good old days, they were meant to seperate the womenfolk from the menfolk...the men congregate in the ground floor with the women on the first level...seperated and segregated..they can witness whatever is happening in the courtyard...despite that, i find the design charming...a few days ago, i heard a fascinating account from an elderly woman...something about her stay in one of the middle eastern countries...when she had to deal with swarms of locusts and how it would get all over you by the time she managed to skirt the courtyard to go from one room to another..and then she added..."the neighbours' arab servant will be there soon after to scoop up the locusts into a sack"..then she looked thoughtful for a moment and eyed me warily..then she added, "they are delicious, you know...they make something out of it..roasted or something...he'd pick them up and make a meal out of it."...locusts, nature too...so yea...rain, sunshine, wind are all welcome...even locusts and frogs...as long as i have hired help to clean up..and oh...a french chef to make something good out of the frogs' legs...

David, not stem cell research, but the subject of partisan presidential politics. I thought that was banned. My mistake. We are experiencing a wonderful blissful lull right now, in which we go back to being a forum about memetically engineered nontheistic religion. When somebody tries to start a flame war on topics that the members obviously hate each other about and seperate from each other over, he's wrecking the place. If attempting to bring an end to the Church of Virus is not an actionable offense, I don't know what is. -Matt

...wow. servant or not, if i could find women as adaptable as this, i would be a happy boy oh, that's right... they dont really exist here in the USA...only princesses searching for crowns. present company excluded, (as is generally always with our rarified virian women:) of course.
...btw...i have never seen a locust swarm, but they sound extremely revolting...it would take a day at least to get used to.

[Blunderov] Even by N. American standards it looks like Ivan is something special. <snip> Hurricane Ivan upgraded to Category 5 storm Storm capable of catastrophic damage as it aims for Caymans
The Associated Press Updated: 3:01 a.m. ET Sept. 12, 2004BULL BAY, Jamaica - Hurricane Ivan strengthened to a rare Category 5 storm capable of catastrophic damage, leaving Jamaica and aiming for the Cayman Islands with winds reaching 165 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Ivan has killed 56 people across the Caribbean so far this week, including 34 in Grenada and 11 in Jamaica.
Millions more people are in its path, with Ivan projected to go between the Cayman Islands, make a direct hit on Cuba and then either move into the Gulf of Mexico or hit South Florida. </snip>
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5927015/
[Blunderov] There is a slide show on this page. Never mind taking the just roofs of houses, Ivan is tearing down brick walls!
Here's hoping it wanders off out to sea without making landfall anywhere else.
Best Regards.

I live in New Orleans, LA. I am supposed to spend much of next week at a catfish plant north of Meridian, MS, but I can't go while Ivan is dithering about this turn it's supposed to take. It's not a high probability but Tuesday morning I might find myself furiously tossing everything that will fit into my van and running for my life. I can't afford to be 250 miles away when Ivan decides to lurch to the west and hit my home. My wife can't drive the van, and we would lose many more possessions and pets if she had to flee in the car she can drive.
She also wouldn't be able to put up the boards (which I've already acquired and cut to size just in case) for the windows. She might be able to get a neighbor to help, but then again, she might not.
Of course the thing about hurricanes in particular is that one person's good news is another person's bad news. It would be very bad if Ivan had come straight up the Florida peninsula. But it also doesn't seem right to be wishing the disaster upon places like Gulfport or Cameron Parish just because they're less densely populated than New Orleans, Pensacola, or Tampa.

[rhinoceros] Talking of hurricanes, the following was mentioned in #virus a few days ago:
Groups work on schemes to stop hurricanes Cures include fans, icebergs, coating ocean with olive oil http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5988890
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Amateur hurricane-busters have come up with any number of crackpot ideas to spare Florida from ferocious storms. Among them: blowing hurricanes away with giant fans or blowing them up with nuclear warheads.
Even the federal government got into the act, with three decades of ill-fated research called "Project Stormfury" before shelving the idea of weather modification in the 1980s.
But dozens of ideas — part hope, part fantasy — continue to crop up among weather wonks, Internet bloggers and others who think they have come up with a way to spare coastal residents the misery of hurricanes.
Suggestions have included coating the surface of the water with olive oil; towing an iceberg down to Florida to cool down the water temperature; or building large fans on the coast to blow away approaching storms.
"And then there was a guy who called and said he could pray them away," said Hugh Willoughby, a research professor with the International Hurricane Center at Florida International University.
By far the most outlandish proposal, and one of the most recurrent, was the idea to use a nuclear warhead to blow a hurricane out of the water.
"Hurricanes are bad enough without being radioactive," Willoughby said. "Put that genie back in the bottle. Nuclear weapons are more dangerous than hurricanes." <snip>
[rhinoceros] Here is something for the number-crunching members of our congregation from the MIT Tech Review:
Deflecting Hurricanes http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/blog.asp?blogID=1570&trk=nl
<snip> Needless to say, all are fairly iffy, because hurricanes pack a real wallop: according to NOAA the total kinetic energy of a spinning hurricane is about a trillion watts, with about 100 trillion watts released through cloud and rain formation. Note that 1 kiloton of TNT (the Hiroshima bomb was roughly 15 kilotons) generates about one trillion joules of energy—that is, about as much as a hurricane generates every second. So you begin to understand the scale of the problem, and the futility of the proposed solutions.
NOAA - How much energy does a hurricane release? http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/D7.html
