Evolvability

This paper argues that:
Evolvability is a selectable trait

Lucifer mentioned in IRC that he has run simulations including the evolvability factor when he was at school and it seemed to be a good idea.
There is an interesting implication here. Most evolutionists believe that evolution does not have a direction (e.g. from simple to complex organisms) -- it is just adaptations and recombinations.
Now, if it is true that evolvability is selectable, then evolution does have a direction -- towards evolvable organisms.
Except if... evolvability. although selectable, is not always selected. But I wonder if there can be unfavorable circumstances under which natural selection would wipe out the more evolvable organisms. If this cannot happen, then we have a direction.
