Ways to encourage a CoV-like life-style?

I've been thinking a lot lately about getting the CoV back on track, and getting it's members back on track.  It's been a while since we were all on the same page, since we all seemed to come together on a issue of real meaning, and a long time since we've done anything meaningful.

So I propose we step it up a notch here at the CoV.  That instead of posting topics and such that are going to start arguements, to once again post topics that are thought provoking.  Within the next few days I plan to go back into the archeives of the CoV and pull out some topics that brought up a lot of discussion and see what the general opinion on those topics are now.  Sound like fun?  I think so.

Also on my mind has been, how can we propagate our philosophy and 'values,' to other people?  How can we introduce people to the way we think-- without coming off as some kind of whack-o cult?  What strategies are best when explaining your beliefs to another person? ... Just simple things I believe all 'churches' deal with.

Just my thoughts...

Seconded.  I'll participate however necessary.  You go E§

As far as popularizing...

Maybe I'll write an article about COV for kuro5hin and the notion of a  “wiki-religion/philosophy”

If we all vote for it, it will surely get posted.

A good thought, Elven. I'll try to do my part.

There have been a couple of attempts to step it up a notch in the last year, but few participated and they only lasted for a short while. Sometimes I think that there are not many people left watching what we are doing.

Anyone on board with the idea of using COV's numbers to pimp up a story at Kuro5hin?  Nothing against the rules when it comes to voting in blocs.  Part of the game.

Sorry to double-post, but I want to hear Lucifer's ideas on all of this and where he is wanting to go with the CoV.  There was talk of perhaps a format change?  Maybe a huge website update?  I believe if we acheive something big such as that, and mass-email all CoV members, we could get a lot of old members back interested in the site.

I will give up time to help code and help in things that would need to be done in an update.

Perhaps we could test and try out various CMS and Forum packages and find ones that we like.  I'd be willing to throw up some space on my webserver for CMS/Forum testing.  Infact I can give as much space as you'd want for testing purposes.  I haven't came close to even scratching the space on my servers HD, nor do I ever come close to me 1TB bandwidth limit.  So what do you think Luci?

I've always liked the idea of "pimping" up stories.

And sometimes just flat out fabricating stories anonymously and watching them reproduce all over the fucking place is
fun.

You know. For research purposes only.

Lets not turn this topic into a political topic.

There are a few things we should decide...

I believe we should form a group to help test, and implament a new CoV.  I'll make a special account for this on my server, and I'll give access to those who need access to it.

Any objections to this idea?  Any better suggestions?

We should also form a list of CMS software for testing, as well as forum software, and what forum software works with each CMS.  I believe this will help us better decide what CMS we'll want to use.

Perhaps we should make a special board for discussion on this topic, that way others can see what we're doing and give input.

Any volunteers?  I'm in!

We're not planning on branching the CoV... Just giving it an update.  I understand how you feel, I just do not agree, that is all.  When I said, lets not turn this into a political topic, I was directing that to everyone, not just you.  The last thing we need to do is start flaming each other on a topic that was created for the purpose of improvement.

Possibly on our 'new system.'  we can try to have better administration over what is posted where.  We need to stop the political jabber that is getting us no where, and start getting back to the heart and the soul of the CoV.  The CoV isn't all about politics... but if you walked in here from the outside it would surely seem that way.

To me the CoV was a great way for me to keep thinking.  There were constant posts about all the many different sciences.  There was a lot of great debate, heated sometimes, but not nearly as bad as it has became.  I do not feel asif the CoV is fulfilling my want for a constant stream of interesting information anymore.  It's always the same topic (politics) and the same things being said from both sides over and over.

The problem is, there isn't a clear and easy way to deal with this problem.  So many members have such strong political views, and it has so much to do with who we are and how we think, that it almost seems impossible to stop it from coming up on the list.  I think Lucifer feels the same.  He doesn't want to silence anyone for giving their opinion, and he doesn't want to moderate what is posted.  The CoV has always been 'open disussion,' and there has never been a topic you couldn't talk about on here.  I do not think any of us really wants to see topics get 'banned,' but at the same time, I'm not sure if there is much else you can do.  The only choice that seems to have been left is to enforce censorship.

Ban a topic... or ban a person.

Both of these are horrible things to do.  Both of these I believe goes against what we are about... but what other choice do we have if we want to see the CoV prosper?  Do you have some sort of solution for this Joe?  If you do, I'd really like to hear it, as would the rest of the CoV.  We've been reaching out for a solution for a couple years now.

The only good solution I can come up with myself is just to do away with 'the list' and go to a browser-only format.  Then topics will be grouped nicely into their catagories, and those who wish not to be active in political discussion, or be forced to read it... wont have too.

Perhaps you have a better answer Joe?  You have a great mind, you've written some great things.  Why not return to doing that?  Won't you please take part in the effort to clean this place up, and attract others?
