X3D Fritz holds the draw against Kasparov in exciting game one.
12.11.2003 The machine threw down the gauntlet by playing the same Slav
Defense in which Kasparov beat Deep Junior in the first game of their
January match. X3D Fritz grabbed a pawn, sacrificed the exchange and
held on to draw against the world #1, forcing a repetition to end the
battle on move 37.</q>

It is easy to overlook to significance of the phrase 'X3D
Fritz...sacrificed the exchange' in this brief report. Computers are
notoriously materialistic
and this apparent 'positional judgment' on the part of Fritz is very
interesting.

It has the effect of making Fritz appear more human in style.

Best Regards

Well Kasparov pulled it off! He got the program into a very blocked
position in which it could find no constructive moves. Kasparov won a
pawn then later sacrificed it back again but Fritz was already lost.

A great result by Kasparov although it was not a particularly hard game
for him to play.

The match now hinges on the result of game four which will be played on
Tuesday. The world number one may have a tough time of it with the black
pieces because he can not be certain of obtaining the sort of blocked
position in which programs are so prone to floundering.

His priority, as in his previous match with Deep Fritz, is likely to be
to avoid losing the match at all costs. It seems possible that he will
once again go in for a Berlin Defence to the Ruy Lopez but this time he
will be fully forewarned against the possible transposition to a King's
Indian Defence type of position.

Will the Fritz programmers have a surprise in store for him?

Budding conspiracy theorists may make what they will of the report on
ChessFM that the Chessbase offices were burgled very shortly before the
start of the match. According to the report, only software was removed
from the premises.

Best Regards

Match drawn. But not quite as expected - X3d Fritz opened with the d
pawn which came as some surprise. Kasparov found himself playing a
Queen's Gambit Accepted using the same variation with the black pieces
that Vishy Anand had used against him at Wijk aan Zee in 1998.

Soon the situation was exactly as the programmers must have wished: an
open center, queens still on the board and a slight edge for white. In
spite of this the situation was really quite clear cut and Kasparov had
no trouble in setting in motion a sequence of exchanges that left very
little, in terms of both material and complexity, remaining on the
board.

In spite of the obvious respect that Kasparov has for this program, it
is my impression that Kasparov had a reasonably good chance of beating
it in a longer match.

The program still doesn't 'understand' chess. Kasparov knows this about
the program! And, with the proviso that Kasparov avoided tactical
oversights in time pressure, this factor would eventually tell in
Kasparov's favour.

The bottom line is that the worlds best chess players are still better
than the worlds best commercial chess program - but only just.

Best Regards
