I came across this interesting hypothesis on the evolution of the political correctness meme:
Quote:
...political correctness had been invented to protect affirmative action programs and the mindset behind them from the intense scholarly scrutiny it had begun to receive. The insinuation of political correctness was that anyone who had doubts about such programs was almost by definition a covert racist and sexist, and therefore to be discounted rather than responded to.

Any ideas on what kind of evidence could be discovered to support or falsify this view?

The desire for political correctness is an interesting memeplex.  In a sense, it's tolerance that is ingrained in its host's values, coupled with a threat co-meme that makes anything intolerant into a meme-allergen.

Yes, it's possible for them to break off.  As memes evolve, just like creatures, they can diverge and converge to form different m-plexes (take the Protestant Reformation, for example).  The different components of an m-plex can still function independently, but not as well as they can with the group.  Also, the polls could correlate well simply because affirmative action and political correctness have similar memotypes.  This doesn't necessarily indicate that they coevolved, though it does provide evidence for it.
