Evolution is an idea. It, itself can not be a religion. Just like Humanism, itself is not a religon, but a lot of humanists belong to the Unitatian Universalist congregation.
church of virus is a religon. Evolution is the philosphy.
My hypothetical point about AI was: I we could built a computer which passes the turing test this would show that intelligence is possible without free will. I know that we right now can't build this computer, but I'm sure we will as soon as its construction plan is based on the Theory of Evolution and I predict that the software and hardware of this computer will not be separate as in present computers and thus the software will not be copyable (new word?). Just like the human brain will never be divided into soft- and hardware as it is ONE.
We've reached a point in the discussion where I have the strong feeling that we are talking of very different things. I do understand your arguments about restricting it to biology, as these are the same arguments religous and religious indifferent people have.
The arguments I have written here are new, radical - in a word, they are a revolution. Well, they were a revolution when Charles Darwin found out about Evolution. He was a scientist, yes, but he found the ultimate answer to the Question of Life: Life is the result of chance and feedback, from the beginning (the forming of the very first DNA was by chance, wasn't it?) up to now. This process is the ultimate and only creator of Life, and it is called Evolution.
This only philosophical insight mankind ever had also answers question number two: Is there a Meaning of Life? The answer is NO.
It is often hard to understand that most of the thoughts mankind ever had (including my own, and probably yours) about these two questions are void. This is why people don't like the Theory of Evolution. No more babbling about fantasy things like gods, devils, ghosts, creators, meaning and nonsense garbage like philosophy. Free your mind and concentrate on reality: strive for your happiness and your good future free of mind-destroying religion (scientists like Dawkins begin to explore this new view). BTW, this is the answer to question number three: What is my personal place (destiny, meaning, hope) in the universe?
In that way the Theory of Evolution leads us the way away from being part of a uniform controllable mass to individually thinking and caring persons as it assigns each individual an important place in the loop of chance and feedback, Your actions have influence on Your (social) environment, Your thought or Your gene could find its way to a part or the whole population.
