There used to be a time when I personally thought that with very few exceptions, negligible in numbers, every person opposing abortion rights was religious to one degree or another, especially those opposing abortion in any circumstance. I actually had no idea that there are more than a few active atheist or secular pro-life organizations. These groups maintain that they are anti-abortion for a reason, and not based on religious tenets; their reasons vary, but according to Marco Rosaire Rossi, a blogger writing at Hemant Mehta's blog, "The Friendly Atheist" goes through the reasons in detail, and he thinks there is quite a bit of faulty reasoning going on; but what was discouraging to me was that quite a bit of pseudoscience is being used by these groups to justify their reasons. I'm beginning to really think that the atheist label is going to end up being pretty useless pretty soon, that the only thing that unites us is that we do not believe in a supernatural deity, but that we are as diverse as any other community in terms of politics, goals, beliefs about what constitutes a just world, or even if a just world is a goal, etc. Once the number of atheist group increases like it has happened in France and the UK, there would be no point in even mentioning whether one is an atheist or not, because it's not going to reveal much about that person's worldview or philosophy of life. In the end, it'll be a positive development when that happens, because I still think religious beliefs are an impediment for the betterment of humankind. But I'm every day more tempted to simply define myself as a secular humanist and not just an atheist. Or maybe I should say a pro-choice, pro-science, progressive secular humanist.

I'm not surprised. Once you take religion out of the debate you still have a human that at some point between conception and birth becomes a legal person, and that distinction is arbitrary. It is frustrating to see both sides, the pro-choicers and pro-lifers, rage against each other endlessly while not even debating the distinction between human and person.

Fritz]I went to a lecture years ago given by Alfred Adler Junior on Family counseling and therapy. Early in the lecture he pointed out psychotherapy was problematic with adolescents and that really sentient life doesn't begin till after the age of 18. Grant you he was being humorous but none the less as a surviving parent, it resonates.
