Hume’s version, in An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (http://18th.eserver.org/hume-enquiry.html), was “A wise man proportions his belief to the evidence”

Only if your knowledge comes from faith or one of the "other ways of knowing" that the anti-rationalists like to promote.

"The most common of all follies is to believe passionately in the palpably not true. It is the chief occupation of mankind" ~ H. L. Mencken

The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Give and Take

Do unto others before they do unto you

Lets just help one another through life, without the contrivance of a magical deity stopping us from doing what is needed for one another.

That Microbe struggling on a comet in the Ort cloud that whizzes past the earth every couple of hundred years does really care whether humans live or die.

There is no greater power then you, evolve, contribute, and reach out.

Our social construct for the sanctity of life is just that, make believe.

To delude ourselves that we are the least bit important except to a few we touch, is tilting at windmills.

If someone promises you a better way, ask them when the last time was, they gave someone their seat on the bus.

No matter who you are, you have something to give and something to learn

We need to stop over thinking the grand delusion.

We breath; we eat; we reproduce; we die.

Lets get on with it, do the best we can and look after the fellow humans we touch.

If every one of us did just that; life would be brilliant for all.

When we die we will live on in the memories and tales of those to which we gave of ourselves and accepted in return.

The tales and myths are the stuff of a great society.

Believing in and helping each other are the real legends of consequence, that each one of us share and are needed for the continuum of humanity.

Don’t sacrifice, just give and take.

Please and Thank you.

-Fritz-

Every therapeutic cure, and still more, any awkward attempt to show the patient the truth, tears him from the cradle of his freedom from responsibility and must therefore reckon with the most vehement resistance.

Every individual acts and suffers in accordance with his peculiar teleology, which has all the inevitability of fate, so long as he does not understand it.

Thomas Henry Huxley put it this way: “The improver of natural knowledge absolutely refuses to acknowledge authority, as such. For him, scepticism is the highest of duties; blind faith the one unpardonable sin.”

A man full of faith is one who has lost (or never had) the capacity for clear, realistic thought. He is not a mere ass; he is actually ill. -- H. L. Mencken

I confess that I prefer true but imperfect knowledge, even if it leaves much indetermined and unpredictable, to a pretence of exact knowledge that is likely to be false.

… is from F.A. Hayek’s profound 1974 Nobel Prize lecture, “The Pretence of Knowledge“
