Verbally, we can only point to ourselves without using meaningful
words, by shouting 'Hey!" This seems to be a verbal analogue of
'pointing to'. Or has 'Hey!" come to mean "Look at me!"? But it seems
that it would have worked prior to the development of a meaningful
symbol system containing such words.
In any case, it seems that enough modes have been identified to relate
them in a structure and thereby to discover the rest, if any more exist,
by filling in the structural holes.
